Doing the news, I come across so many stories of the men and women we are losing in combat. Many die, some are seriously injured. They all hurt a little but when they are local, that is the time we can stand up and help! Army Specialist Brett Allan Paige of Manteca is recovering from extensive injuries suffered in Afghanistan. The 2007 Sierra High graduate was wounded May 17 when an improvised explosive device detonated. Paige underwent several successful surgeries. He’ll be spending the next month recuperating at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Brett Paige worked at Doctors Hospital of Manteca after graduating from high school. He also attended Delta College. Paige started his Army service on Aug. 10, 2009. He completed his first deployment in the Global War on Terror as an Army Ranger. For his second deployment – during which he was wounded – Paige opted to serve with the 82nd Airborne. His parents Budd and Patty Paige indicated they were grateful for the United States Army “for their outstanding medical care and personal support during this difficult time.” They are asking those who wish to do so to send messages of encouragement and support to their son on Facebook at Manteca Soldier Brett Paige. Kara Franklyn was born in Southern California but grew up in Northern California. Walnut Creek will always be considered somewhat "my home!" I went to school there, fought and played with my brothers and sister there, had my first heart broken there and made lifelong friends that no matter where I live will always be there! I have lived in several cities in California, but could never see leaving the state. I love it way to much. Except for the highest gas prices in the nation, From Monterey to Tahoe, DisneyLand to the San Francisco Zoo, it just doesn't get much better! I have married to my husband Pete for almost 2 years now. He is an amazing person, who makes me laugh, think and become stronger as a person every day. No matter what the situation is, it's the little things that can make it the most special! I have a close family filled with the craziest, most fun and very loving brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and a very fiesty mom. I love to go whale watching. In fact, Pete fufilled one of my all time dreams. Since I was a kid, I have loved Beluga whales. I always told my Mom I wanted one and would keep it in our bathtub. She said it wouldn't fit, likely story, she just didn't want to have to take care of it! ha. I went back to Conneticut and New York to meet the rest of Petes family and there is an aquarium in Mystic Conneticut where you can swim, pet the Beluga's! It was so amazing! They are so sweet and remind me of Pillsbury dough boys of the sea! I have been so blessed in my life. No matter what the situation, good or bad, I have been surrounded by family, friends and Pete who have been there to share the laughter or the tears. They have helped me to become a better person who appreciates that no matter what, if you have family and friends, life, no matter what comes your way can be appreciated and even laughed at!
