Biography
Fans call them "the Peks," and this Houston-based conjunto certainly has plenty of the former, especially among the audience out looking for the young blood, or new-sounding bands. Since forming in the early '90s, the band has slimmed down from a quintet to a quartet, the band's exciting sound often driven by interplay between guitarist and leader Jaime Ruiz and the ever-exploratory Gilberto Gonzalez on accordion. Sonically, this group joins the ranks of adventurers, with both Gonzalez and Ruiz quite fond of effects pedals and reverb-soaked tone settings. The guitarist also uses wah-wah, not exactly an impossibility in Mexican music, but a trifle rare. The Discos MM label out of Dickinson, TX, has released a total of five recordings by the group at a rate of nearly one per year since 1994. The solid De Sangre Mexicana was released on the TH-Mex label. The group has toured throughout the United States and Mexico.
