Biography
Named after a machine used for excavation and trench-digging on construction sites, the roots-pop band Ditch Witch formed in Columbia, Missouri in 1991 with vocalist/guitarist Chris Gebhardt, guitarist Barry Hibdon, drummer Joel Trueblood and bassist/vocalist Craig Winn. Drawing on influences like Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Replacements, the quartet issued a pair of independent-label singles, "If I Lose" and "Her Fall," both later collected on their 1994 debut Everywhere Nowhere, which marked the addition of new drummer Brian Coughlin. Following the arrival of bassist Shannon Mercer, Ditch Witch released their sophomore effort, Starvation Box, in 1996. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
